A green computer? Well, it's definitely green-er than what most of us are familiar with. And considering how important green living has become, it makes perfect sense that computers should start shading toward green as well.

A new computer company, CherryPal, has introduced a small, efficient, quiet, and low-cost computer that should appeal to all of us.

Running on just 2 watts of power, and taking up very little space on the desktop (80% less hardware than a conventional PC), it has no moving parts and is expected to last much longer than the typical PC lifespan of 2-3 years. That means less hardware in landfills, which is significant because according to The Sierra Club only 10% of computers are recycled.

CherryPal provides a patent-pending combination of both hardware and software encryption, making it highly secure. The operating system is a customized version of open source Debian/GNU Linux. Because the hardware refresh period for Linux-based systems tends to be longer than for Windows-based computers, there is a reduction in energy and resources consumed in the manufacturing of replacement equipment (Linux is greener than Windows).

Additionally, users can expect an unconventional approach to home computing. Instead of accessing programs and data on your desktop computer, the majority of information is processed and stored on the web in a highly secure environment called the CherryPalCloud, which is automatically accessed at boot-up and offers a simple, intuitive interface. The benefit is no worries about application downloads, viruses/hackers, or lag time--so it's fast as well as convenient and safe.

Their motto is: Green, Fair, and Open. You can learn more about Cloud Computing and get access to additional information by visiting the CherryPal website. But before you do, take note of the promotional discount code on this site (see below).

CherryPal does not offer discounts directly on their site, but they will honor the code offered here. Your discount will be $10 off the already affordable price of $249. There is no additional subscription fee. They even have FREE 24/7 support.

Keep in step with a green lifestyle by exploring a new kind of green computer, and do it without breaking the bank. Not a bad deal. Write down the code and check it out: CherryPal.

IMPORTANT UPDATE, DECEMBER 6, 2008

This page was originally posted in August 2008 promoting a new computer company: CherryPal. Well, the company experienced difficulties in the early going, and shipment of their green cloud computer was delayed several times.

As a result--for a time--I suspended my endorsement because it was unclear if CherryPal could deliver on product and customer service.

As of December 6, 2008, I know for a fact that units are shipping, although demand seems to be outpacing supply. I also have a bit more insight into the company's vision, and with that in mind, I am cautiously optimistic about endorsing CherryPal. I have yet to receive my own computer, so I'll have more to say at a later time.

If you choose to purchase, please keep in mind we are all test driving a new product from a new company, and there is a bit of risk involved as the company tries to establish itself. I will update this page whenever appropriate.

IMPORTANT UPDATE, DECEMBER 18, 2008

I have just received my CherryPal, but even before I hook it up, I have decided to post some new information on this page. You can read an objective review of CherryPal by GreenTechGirl.

She also adds some perspective.

Consider the information I've provided (and check out this forum) before you commit to buying a CherryPal.

I certainly think the basic idea of a simple and efficient device for internet browsing, email, etc. is a very good one. Greener computing is a good idea. Let's hope more companies pursue this vision.
